What is Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene is the practice of grooming and maintaining a basic level of cleanliness by caring for your physical well-being in order to protect yourself against germs that can cause illnesses.

Why is Personal Hygiene Important

Unlike kids or teens, adults are expected to act responsibly and maintain good personal hygiene to prevent themselves and their families from contracting or spreading infectious diseases.

Bad personal hygiene habits like unconsciously picking your nose or avoiding taking a shower every day (out of laziness) can lead to infectious diseases like colds, flu, etc. That is why it is essential to adopt better hygiene habits to avoid all these illnesses and live a healthy life.

  • Good personal hygiene protects you from contagious diseases and helps you stay disease-free.

  • It prevents you from passing on the infection to your loved ones at home or colleagues at work.

  • It boosts your self-esteem by enhancing your appearance.

Types of Hygiene

We must engage in a number of hygiene practices regularly to take care of ourselves. However, all those different practices mainly fall into seven categories.

Daily Personal Hygiene Checklist

I am sure you must be already aware of the basic hygiene practices. Still, this comprehensive checklist for personal hygiene will provide you with all the (tiniest) hygiene habits to remind you how to maintain hygiene at home or work.

Hand Hygiene

As you perform almost every activity with your hands, they are the dirtiest part of your body, which makes washing your hands the most vital personal hygiene practice. So, here are some hand hygiene practices to consider:

  • Always wash your hands with soap (or hand wash) and water - after using the toilet, before and after eating food (especially when eating something with your hands), after handling garbage or getting into contact with dirt and dust.

  • Similarly, washing your hands before preparing food is a good practice.

Body Hygiene

Practices like bathing, washing, and taking care of your skin are all included in this type.

Oral Hygiene

When it comes to oral hygiene, prevention is always better than cure. Since we're all aware of how costly dental treatments can be!!

Furthermore, a toothbrush cannot always reach all the areas of your mouth. That is why simply brushing isn't enough.

So, here are some tips to avoid dental issues and maintain healthy teeth:

  • It is best to floss before brushing your teeth to increase the effectiveness of your brushing (after removing the food residues stuck between the teeth).

  • Brushing your teeth after each meal is obviously good practice. However, brushing twice (in the morning and evening) is usually sufficient.

  • Clean your tongue after brushing. The bacteria on your tongue may start accumulating if you skip out on cleaning. So, use a Tongue Scraper or the bristles of your toothbrush to clean the surface of your tongue.

  • Use a Mouthwash to keep your mouth fresh (when brushing or flossing isn't an option). However, do not eat or drink for 30 minutes after rinsing.

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day. Numerous factors contribute to bad breath and dry mouth. But you can enhance your oral health simply by drinking sufficient water.

Intimate Hygiene

Intimate hygiene is itself a whole lot bigger topic to talk about. And while it differs for men and women, certain aspects are common for both.

  • Avoid wearing tight inner wears (or clothes, in general) as they can cause excessive sweating and infections.

Self-Grooming & Hygiene

Grooming is a supporting aspect of personal care and hygiene that enhances your overall personality. So grooming yourself (physically) goes hand-in-hand.

You are GOOD to go when you look good, smell good, and feel good!

  • Hairy armpits may promote sweating, body odor, and bacterial growth. So, make sure you shave your armpits.

Do these things after taking a shower:

  • Clean your ears safely. I recommend avoiding Q-tips, but if you do, use them carefully. Otherwise, just wiping with a Washcloth from the outside will suffice. Besides, you don't have to do this daily, just whenever you shampoo your hair.

  • Use a Deodorant or an Antiperspirant to prevent unpleasant body odor.

  • Above all, avoid sharing your personal care items like towels, combs, toothbrushes, etc. (Whether you are sick or not!)

Clothing Hygiene

The clothes that you wear may cause skin infections if not washed properly. That is why clothing hygiene is equally important as other hygiene practices.

  • Always change your clothes after taking a shower or bath.

  • Wear fresh and clean clothes and wash them regularly. Also, try wearing a clean pair of socks or stockings daily.

  • Avoid sharing or wearing someone else's clothes (or even shoes).

  • After an intense workout session, change out of your sweaty clothes ASAP.

Sickness Hygiene

Follow these sickness hygiene practices when you are sick:

  • Cover your mouth with a mask, tissue, or hand when sneezing. (It is also considered good manners in social settings).

  • Do not share food, utensils, or any personal items with other people when you are sick.
