For most of us, making time to eat a healthy breakfast in the morning has always been the last priority. The next thing we know is that it’s already late and there’s no time to eat. Thus end up skipping breakfast.

Sometimes it could be due to busy schedules, not feeling hungry in the morning, bored of eating the same breakfast every day, or religious reasons, while sometimes just because of plain laziness.

Besides, there’s this trend called intermittent fasting which has now given people even more reasons for skipping their breakfasts. That’s when they switch between eating and fasting sessions to eventually lose weight. It’s quite popular these days, but there’s little to no evidence of it in the long run. Moreover, the research is still in its early stage.

To be sure, are all these reasons really worth skipping breakfast for?

However, there will always be studies and research opposing the current healthful pieces of advice. Yet one philosophy will persist, that morning breakfast is, without doubt, the most important meal of the day! Also, there is enough science to support it.

One should not attend even the end of the world without a good breakfast.

Is Breakfast Actually Important?

Certainly, yes! And you’ll agree with me when I’ll tell you the priceless benefits of breakfasts.

Here are the 10 reasons why breakfast is important meal of the day:

1. It helps to boost your metabolism

Breakfast literally means breaking your fast.

In other words, after long hours of fasting at night (i.e. your sleeping hours) your body is low on energy.

Without breakfast, you’ll be running on empty which will make you feel tired and drained out quickly. And that’s definitely something you don’t want in the early hours.

Nutritious morning breakfast is like fuel to your body which will keep you on top of your game from the start. Hence, eating a nutritious breakfast will provide your body and brain with the fuel it needs and boost your metabolism.

2. It helps to maintain a healthy weight

Healthy body weight is associated with eating food like whole grains, eggs, vegetables, fruits, low-fat or fat-free milk, and milk products. Therefore, including breakfasts with high protein will help you feel full until the next meal and you’re less likely to eat more calories throughout the day.

Apart from what you eat, you also need to take notice of how much you eat. (Eating a doughnut or pizza for breakfast is not considered healthy). Breakfast is supposed to be healthy, not fast!

Research shows people who skip breakfast have more risk of weight gain whereas those who don’t skip are more likely to have healthier weights.

3. It helps in increasing productivity

It’s no surprise that skipping your breakfast tends to make you appear a bit dull, making it hard to concentrate on things. Since your brain hasn’t received the fuel it needs. It can make your tasks look harder and you may need more time to complete them than usual.

Eating breakfast regularly will not only improve your memory but will also help you focus and perform better at work. Also, your early hours are of prime importance when it comes to having a productive day at work. To make sure you make the most of those hours – do not skip your breakfast.

4. It reduces the risk of higher health problems

Studies have linked eating breakfast regularly to good health. Eating a healthy breakfast may lower your chances of getting diseases like type-2 diabetes and obesity.

It’s common sense that poor nutrition may cause illness. If you maintain a healthy diet, you’re bound to have good health.

5. It helps in weight loss

People who have their breakfasts mostly have a healthy diet altogether. It develops better eating habits and they’re more likely to make better food choices throughout the day.

Whereas if you skip your breakfast, you may feel hungry later on that you would grab whatever food is nearby. And turn out snacking on high-fat, high-sugar foods which your body won’t like.

Eating morning breakfast will help you avoid this.

6. It helps to avoid cravings later in the day

As I mentioned earlier, that if you skip your breakfast you might end up craving more later on during the day and snack on unhealthy foods.

7. It helps control blood sugar

After waking up, the blood sugar level that your body needs is typically low. Eating breakfast causes you to refill it. As a result, it helps your body to keep its blood sugar levels stable during the day.

8. It is good for your heart

There have been studies showing a link between heart health and breakfasts.

As I mentioned above, breakfast is necessary to help control blood sugar, and having high blood sugar will increase your chances of heart problems.

Another study detected that breakfast skippers may develop unhealthy habits in the long run leading to heart issues.

People who eat breakfasts are more likely to get less fat and more fibre in their diets. And common breakfast foods like oatmeal, cereals, and bread can elevate your heart health.

9. It affects your moods

Your blood sugar levels are directly affecting your moods. Hence, skipping breakfast may cause you to have worse moods during the day, making you feel more angry or nervous.

10. It helps to boost your immune system

Lastly, eating a healthy breakfast in the morning will help boost your immune system which helps in fighting the common colds and flu in winters. Especially after going through the covid-19 times, this should be of utmost importance.

All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast.

Investing a little time now in preparing and having your breakfast will help you gain bigger benefits later.
