Best Board Games of All Time for Adults & Kids

Gather together to have an evening full of joy and laughter with the best board games of all time for adults and kids.

1. Monopoly

No. of Players: 2 to 8

For Age Groups: 8 yrs and above

Monopoly is one of the most popular classic game night games that you may have definitely enjoyed playing while growing up. As the name suggests, it is a trading game based on the economic term itself. It was primarily created in the early 20th century. Later on, different versions of it have developed.

Initially, the players will be given a fixed sum of (play) money. And they will continue playing by rolling a pair of dice and traveling around the board. The game involves buying and developing properties; while collecting rent from other players and forcing them into bankruptcy. So eliminating them from the game!

The aim of the game is to stay financially sound. And the player who survives till the end will be declared the winner.

The average time it lasts is 45 minutes. However, the more players, the more time it will take.

Moreover, if you want to try something new, monopoly has several versions apart from the classic one. Such as the Marvel Avengers Edition, Friends: the TV Series Edition, Lord of The Rings Edition, Transformers Edition, Super Mario Celebration Edition, the Game of Thrones Edition, and many more!

2. Scrabble

No. of Players: 2 to 4

For Age Groups: 8 yrs and above (Also, there is scrabble junior for younger kids.)

One of my personal favorite board games, Scrabble, a word game, was invented in 1931. It starts with the first player placing the first letter tile in the star square in the center of the board.

The aim is to score points by placing letter tiles on the board and forming words. And the player with the highest score by the end wins the game.

It is an easy-to-play game for those with good vocabulary, and you can always set a time limit if you want.

3. Pictionary

No. of Players: 3 or more

For Age Groups: 8 yrs and above

Pictionary, an exciting team game enjoyed by both; adults and kids, was invented in the 1980s. It is somewhat like charades. But instead of acting, one will be drawing on paper. The objective is to guess what the 'picturist' is trying to convey through his drawing. And the team that reaches the finish square first and correctly guesses the answer wins the game.

4. Risk

No. of Players: 2 to 6

For Age Groups: 7 yrs and above

Risk is a classic strategy game that was invented in the early 1950s. Here the game board comprises a map of six continents. The goal is to defeat all your opponents and take control of all the territories on the board while defending your own and ultimately conquering the entire world.

The average game may last for over 2 hours or even days.

Furthermore, there are several different editions of risk.

5. Clue

No. of Players: 2 to 6

For Age Groups: 8 yrs and above

Clue, formerly known as Cluedo, is a classic murder-mystery board game created in the 1940s. The goal of this game is to uncover a murder mystery - by determining the suspect, the weapon used, and the location where the crime took place. And the first person to solve the mystery.. wins the game.

An average Cluedo game takes about 45 minutes to finish.

6. Catan

No. of Players: 3 to 4 (standard edition)

For more people, there is a 5-6 player expansion available.

For Age Groups: 10 yrs and above

Catan, commonly known as The Settlers of Catan, was first published in 1995 in Germany. Here, Catan is a fictional island where the players must compete by acquiring resources and building the largest settlement. The goal is to be the first to earn 10 victory points. Overall, this modern classic board game is a good combination of strategy and luck.

7. Battleship

No. of Players: 2 only

For Age Groups: 7 yrs and above

Battleship, a war-board game, is quite simple to play. It was once a paper and pencil game before being marketed as a plastic board game in 1967.

While setting up the game, each player gets a game board with 2 grids and 5 ships. Each player takes turns firing shots at the opposing ships. The objective of the game is to destroy the opposing player's warships.

And the player who sinks all 5 of his opponent's ships first - wins the game.

8. Ludo

No. of Players: 2 to 4

For Age Groups: 3 yrs and above

Ludo, primarily based on the Indian game pachisi, was patented in London in 1896. Initially, a player must roll a six to move his token out of the base to start playing. After traveling around the board, the goal is to get all four of your tokens into the home triangle. It is a highly addictive game of luck rather than skill.

The average Ludo game length is less than 90 minutes.

9. Checkers

No. of Players: 2 only

For Age Groups: 5 yrs and above

Checkers is one of the world's oldest games (also known as Draughts) that has been around for thousands of years. This 2-player game is played by moving one's pieces across the checkerboard. A player wins the game when his opponent cannot make a move further.

A casual game of checkers lasts for 30 minutes or less; however, competitive games may last longer. It makes a great strategy board game for a game night for older kids and adults.

10. Trivial Pursuit

No. of Players: 2 to 6

For Age Groups: 16 yrs and above

Here is a trivia board game introduced in 1981; that can be played in teams or by individuals. You will find questions from different categories that range from general knowledge to pop culture.

Playing this game involves simply moving around the board by answering the trivia questions correctly and collecting a wedge of each color. A typical Trivial Pursuit board game lasts for about 80 minutes.

These were the best board games of all time for adults and kids.

However, apart from the board games mentioned above, there are some more amazing classic family board games. They can be a good alternative, are somewhat similar, or are inspired by those mentioned above. So, here's an additional list of board games you might be interested in:
