What is a Social Media Detox
The practice of eliminating or minimizing social media consumption to save your mental energy and benefit in multiple other ways is called a social media detox.
Some people do take all sorts of drastic measures to completely disconnect from social media platforms.
However, it is still possible without going overboard by taking a break from social media for mental health and well-being; for a while. Maybe a 30-days or a 1-week social media detox.
Social Media Detox Benefits
Here are the benefits of no social media for a month:
Provides a Mental Break
Taking a break from social media gives your mind a break to take a step back and reflect, making better use of your time and mental space.
Provides More Free Time
When you are not constantly checking social media out of boredom, you'll have more free time to engage in creative hobbies and activities that truly bring you joy.
Improves Your Mental Health
After a detox, you will no longer feel like keeping up with the Joneses, which will considerably decrease your anxiety and improve your overall mental health.
Strengthens Your Relationships
Spending less time online allows for more face-to-face interactions with loved ones. It eventually strengthens your bonds with your partner, friends, and family.
Improves Your Physical Health
The use of social media and sedentary behavior go hand-in-hand, which poorly influences your physical health. So, after detoxing, you'll find yourself more active and willing to replace social media time with productive physical activities.
Breaks Your Phone Addiction
Losing control of your digital habits due to phone addiction is common. Taking a break from social media can help you regain control over your phone and digital habits.
Signs You Need A Social Media Break
Yes, social media has TRULY become a big part of this modern society. It, however, has its own advantages and disadvantages.
You may not realize it, but as much as it helps you stay connected to friends and catch up on the news, the endless scrolling can have a negative impact on you. So how can you tell if you need a social media detox?
Here are the 12 signs that you might need a break from social media:
You spend most of your day consuming social media rather than doing your work.
You end up scrolling impulsively for hours without realizing how much time you've spent.
You experience FOMO (fear of missing out) whenever you try to unplug.
You are comparing yourself unfairly to others on social media, resulting in mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and body image issues.
You feel like wanting to record and take pictures during an important event rather than actually enjoying it.
You find yourself obsessively reaching for your phone every now and then.
You feel more lonely and isolated than ever.
You often post vague stuff on social media to attract the attention of others.
You spend more time on social media than you do with your actual pals.
You scroll through social media the first thing when you wake up and the last thing before you sleep.
You are glued to your phone (almost all day) and can't go more than 15 minutes without it.
The usage of social media is distracting you from your real-life goals.
Now, if you can relate to any of the above situations - then a practical social media cleanse challenge is all you need.
How To Do A Social Media Cleanse Challenge
Do you feel the need for a social media detox? But how to take a break from social media without deleting the app from your phone? Try this 30-day social media detox challenge!
Whether you're taking a break from social media for a week or a month - this challenge will help you get started on the right note.
DAY-1:
Today, avoid spending the entire morning (until 12pm) scrolling, posting, or responding to messages on social media. Instead, add these productive morning habits to your routine.
DAY-2:
Avoid using social media while eating and drinking, whether it is any meal, morning coffee, or snacks.
DAY-3:
Stay away from your social media platforms for the entire afternoon, i.e., from 12pm to 5pm.
DAY-4:
As your phone is always near you, notifications are the most common source of distractions. So, turn off the notifications of all your social media apps.
DAY-5:
Unplug from social media for the whole evening, i.e., between 5pm to 9pm.
DAY-6:
Manage and use your phone wisely by setting time limits on your apps. Aside from the social media cleanse challenge, it will also improve your productivity at work.
Besides, you can easily make it difficult for yourself to access social media with apps like StayFocused or Forest.
DAY-7:
You can use social media today. But make sure to unplug 2 hours before bedtime. Instead, engage in more relaxing activities that will help you sleep earlier. This is easily doable every day if you maintain a good night routine.
DAY-8:
Your device may already have a built-in feature that helps you track which apps you use the most. Alternatively, an app like Moment can be used to find out exactly how much time you are devoting to social media apps.
This tells you how much time you could save if you reduce your use of social media. So, that you manage to use your time wisely.
DAY-9:
You will not use social media for the first 2 hours of your day, regardless of when you wake up.
DAY-10:
Today is a TOTAL social media detox day! So, for the next 24 hours, you will not use any social media platform. If you end up checking, you will have to punish yourself by doing something you hate (that may involve organizing your closet or any physical workout you dislike).
Also, moving forward, there will be a few more complete social media detox (or punish yourself) days.
DAY-11:
Avoid going online until it is 5 o'clock in the evening.
DAY-12:
Time to update your wallpaper! You can put a quote on your lock (and home) screen that reminds you of this challenge and motivates you to complete it.
DAY-13:
Keep track and limit your social media usage by up to 1 hour today.
DAY-14:
Ask a friend to do the challenge with you. Today, both of you avoid using social media.
It is easier to accomplish things when you have an accountability partner. The best part is you both can motivate each other.
DAY-15:
Do not spend more than 45 minutes on social media.
DAY-16:
Avoid using your phone to access social media today. You can, however, access the sites from your computer.
DAY-17:
Limit your social media usage to 30 minutes today.
DAY-18:
Staying away from social media may make you feel that you will miss important updates or events. But trust me, it is nothing to worry about. However, if FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is your concern, you can tell people you are taking a break.
DAY-19:
Do not use social media for more than 15 minutes. (Utilize your time wisely!) It will also give you an idea of your priorities.
DAY-20:
Today is no social media day. So, stay away from social media or bear the penalty!
Now, let us move on to challenges that will make it hard for you to access social media.
DAY-21:
Unfollow accounts on social media that serve no use other than to keep you distracted. Also, be extra cautious about who you follow.
DAY-22:
When logging into your account, uncheck the SAVE PASSWORD box. Since you are less likely to open apps if you are forced to log into them every time you open them.
DAY-23:
It's time to break the habit of reaching for your phone by keeping it in another room when spending time with loved ones.
DAY-24:
Stop using your phone as an alarm clock and instead get a proper alarm clock. It will help you avoid using your phone immediately after you wake up.
DAY-25:
It is time to go cold turkey for a day! Yes, I am asking you to delete the social media apps from your phone.
You may not have realized it, but the reason; why you (mindlessly) open a social media app is that it appears in front of you every time you check your phone. So, deleting those apps will remove them from your sight and, perhaps, from your mind.
DAY-26:
Replace your digital habit with something productive. Social media detox does not mean you have to completely unplug from your phone. Find more fascinating things to do with your phone, such as taking an online class, reading e-books, listening to podcasts, etc.
DAY-27:
Replace your social media time with screen-free activities. It can be anything from trying a new recipe to enjoying skywatching. This list of screen-free activities for adults will help you distract yourself from your phone addiction.
DAY-28:
Make an effort to maintain relationships outside your social media platforms by connecting with real people.
DAY-29:
You may find a lot of spare time during your day when you take a social media detox. Utilize that time indulging in some creative hobbies or activities. These will keep you away from boredom and social media!
DAY-30:
You are almost there! Today is a no-social-media day and the last day of your challenge. So, no scrolling, posting, or responding to messages on social media for the next 24 hours - you got this!
This concludes the 30-day social media detox challenge.
And remember, there is nothing wrong with spending time on social media as long as you know how to use it intentionally. I hope this challenge inspires you to take a break.
Save it for later
